The department of music, theatre, and dance at iup has a rich history dating back to the founding of this institution in 1875 Graduates of the department have gone on to distinguished careers in performance, teaching, and other fields within the music theatre, and dance professions. The department of music, theatre, and dance prepares the next generation of music and theatre professionals Teachers, performers, composers, conductors, scholars, theater technicians, and those in adjacent fields. We empower students to reach beyond what they thought possible, exploring unfamiliar musical territories, building essential skills, and expanding into secondary performance areas, music creation, and music industry opportunities. With a ba in theatre or musical theatre, a theatre or dance minor, or a certificate, you can explore stage design, directing, playwriting, choreography, and leadership within an arts organization
All students interested in being a music major or minor are required to audition. Follow your passion and sing a role in one of our opera or music theater productions, or perform with the jazz bands, the iup orchestra, the chorale, the chamber choir, or one or more of the many other ensembles we offer. The undergraduate and graduate catalog provides course descriptions and other important information about your program of study at iup. The mission of the iup department of music, theatre, and dance is the professional preparation of music students as teachers, performers, composers, and scholars at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The program combines strengths of the voice program of the music department with the performance programs of the theatre, dance and performance department An audition for both departments is required for entry into this challenging program.
