Tortoises do so in the wild because they have to in order to escape long periods of colder temperatures, diminished sunlight and lack of food. To brumate, cool them down and then just leave them be for the period of brumation, checking on them every few days Failure to brumate doesn't seem to stop our beloved tortoise species from reproducing, but i have to believe it does have endocrinological effects I don't skip brumation for any temperate reptile unless i have some reason to suspect they are unhealthy or unfit for it in some way I don't see bruamtion as some big monumental scary thing. Iāve decided not to brumate them since it looks like iād need a refrigerator and would also have to prep them for it I have had my russian tortoise 3 yrs and first time she decided brumate for 6 weeks now I keep checking on her I learned that they really don't brumate is that true She did come out to soak and drink i offered her food she wouldnt eat Just soaked and drank then poo then went back and dug.
I'm planning to brumate my adult russian for the first time So, i've been soaking daily and feeding a lot, which i plan to do until the end of october Then, start fasting her at the beginning of november, at normal temps For the last two weeks of november, i'm guessing i should lower. Similar threads my russian tort wants to brumate but i don't have the resources.
