Unesco’s 2017 recommendation on science and scientific researchers (rs|sr) provides a vision for science that goes beyond growth and productivity and puts human wellbeing and inclusion at the centre.

The recommendation on science and scientific researchers sets out an international norm urging states to help women and girls to pursue scientific careers. The recommendation emphasises that any scientific conduct is subject to universal human rights standards Research should be conducted in a responsible manner that respects the human rights of scientific researchers and human research subjects alike. For science to benefit everyone equally, we need to transform science ecosystems Recommends that member states should apply the following provisions by taking whatever legislative or other steps may be required to apply within their respective territories the principles and norms set forth in this recommendation; In her statement on the topic, the director general of unesco says

Science and the dissemination of scientific knowledge are essential for the achievement of most of the 17 sustainable development goals. Any scientific conduct is subject to universal human rights standards (a) the significant value of science as a common good (b) that a cadre of talented and trained personnel is the cornerstone of an indigenous research and experimental development capability and indispensable for the utilization and exploitation of research carried out elsewhere; Consolidated report on the implementation by member states of the 2017 recommendation on science and scientific researchers (41 c/36) examination of the consolidated report by the executive board at its 212th session (autumn 2021)
