Prior to this, the rule was to spell the word percent in full after a numeral (for example, 92 percent or 1.5 percent) It’s now preferable to use the percent sign — in most situations. Chicago prefers the use of numerals for all numbers used as part of percentages, but use the word “percent” for humanistic copy and the “%” symbol for scientific and statistical copy: While ap style generally specifies that numbers below 10 should be spelled out as words and numbers 10 and above should be written as actual numerals, percentages always involved numerals and the word.
