Our identity is forged through the resilience against erasure, genocide, and assimilation. The state vowed to engage residents for a new project, but it still plans to take their homes. State officials say that, at this point, no decisions have been made about what communities will be affected by the expansion. The near‑erasure of black residents from a place that was once overwhelmingly african american is not an accident of time, but the result of deliberate policies and practices.
