Over the past week, seismic activity was experienced in the eastern section of the kakula mine, leading to kamoa copper’s management team suspending underground operations on sunday, may 18, 2025 All employees were safely brought above ground in line with protocols, and mobile equipment was removed from the mine workings. Future mining operations at the kakula copper mine in the democratic republic of congo would be drastically modified following seismic activity in may which affected the eastern side of the mine and temporarily shut operations. Due to damage of underground pumping infrastructure at the deep sections, underground water levels rose rapidly, resulting in substantial flooding of the eastern side of the kakula mine. The seismic incident that occurred at the kakula mine in may 2025 raised a set of reflections on the security of mining operations and their economic and social impacts in the democratic republic of congo.
