This handout provides information about annotated bibliographies in mla, apa, and cms. The annotated bibliography looks like a works cited page but includes an annotation after each source cited An annotation is a short summary and/or critical evaluation of a source. The mla style center provides the following guidance for formatting an mla annotated bibliography Title your reference page as “annotated bibliography” or “annotated list of works cited.” An annotated bibliography is simply a works cited page in which each citation is followed by an annotation (note) that describes or evaluates the source (or both).

Annotated bibliographies don’t have specific guidelines in the 8 th edition mla handbook for making quotes Therefore, if you need to include quotes, keep them short Use hanging indents for citations. Start with the same format as a regular works cited list Do not add an extra line between the citations If your list of citations is especially long, you can organize it by topic
