In a deleted line from the script, louis while possessed by vinz clortho said gozer thinks it's funny to change their forms Now it's interesting in the concept art in afterlife they show different statues of gozer done in different appearances, hinting that gozers appearance does change whenever he manifests. I actually dont think gozer was contained Gozer is from another dimension Gozer needs an anchor to stay in our dimension (vinz and zuul) and gozer used human spirits to manifest a body so as to have a physical form.
