In august 2025 myanmar’s ruling military junta—officially known as the state administration council—announced plans for a multistage general election to begin on december 28, 2025 It would be the first national vote since the 2020 election, the results of which were overturned when the military seized power in a 2021 coup International observers have largely regarded the planned vote. Behind this reform, allegedly a measure of openness, the junta is in fact preparing the conditions to control coverage of a vote it has already begun to lock down. With backing from china, myanmar's military junta has managed to recapture a string of key towns and highways and put rebels on the back foot.
