The bedt (and palmer's dock & east river terminal railroad) operated steam powered locomotives from 1870 until october 25, 1963, at such time when diesel electric locomotives replaced the steam powered equipment. The bedt would not be a common carrier for many years, at witnessed by the court document below, but it would achieve common carrier status by 1940 Prior to being named a common carrier, the bedt (and bush terminal and new york dock with it) was classified a contract terminal. Bedt operated a fleet of compact but powerful steam locomotives known as sidetankers and saddletankers These locomotives were also known as drill engines, docksiders, and in europe, they are known as tank engines The bedt earned its place in the annals of history as the final operator of steam locomotives for freight service in new york, with steam operations drawing to a close on october 25, 1963
The terminal continued its operations with diesel locomotives until its closure in 1983. Home > brooklyn east district terminal > locomotives brooklyn east district terminal photographic roster
