The integrated food safety centers of excellence (food safety coes) is a cdc program that builds capacity for enteric disease surveillance and outbreak response. The secretary may designate eligible entities to be regional food safety centers of excellence, in addition to the 5 centers designated under subsection (a). In carrying out activities of the centers of excellence or other programs under this section, the secretary shall not duplicate other federal foodborne illness response efforts. The integrated food safety centers of excellence (food safety coes) provide peer assistance and training to support others track, investigate, and prevent enteric disease illnesses and outbreaks. Established under the 2011 food safety modernization act (fsma), the centers for disease control and prevention’s (cdc) integrated food safety centers of excellence (coes) serve as specialized training and resource hubs for state and local health departments.
