Many folks today have what they call matched tubes, which fall short of what i personally term as matched What follows, is the result of testing, measuring, and screening, with a bit of listening and playing. Are more accurate and precise than tubes But that precision makes it difficult for them to really sound and react like tubes And alone, if not carefully designed (in amps, that is) they are sterile and lifeless There are some notable exceptions and solid state in pedals is common for both crap and well loved, top of the line pedals
Also a good deal of the motor's power is needed to felt the tube and at least dissipated into unwanted thermal energy One of the solutions is to replace the tubes by an articulated drive shaft with universal joints. If so, you should be able to use the tubes you like and adjust the bias for those tubes If not, how does the amp sound with the el34's Are they running way too hot If the amp sounds good and the tubes are not overheating, chances are the amp bias is fine for the el34's

The head i've purchased is a laney tf700 and a 4x12 cab I've never used tubes before so would like to know what sort of things i need to know about using tube amps Do i need to carry spare tubes with me

In any case, the tubes on the new korg electribes, which i have in the store, are only for distortion There is no warmth or enhancement of dynamics, only a bad distortion And of course the power tubes need to be cooking (a thd hotplate or similar attenuator is highly recommended as well to reduce the sheer volume) Even zakk wylde uses a boost in front of his jcm800 despite his use of active.
